1721 in rommon and nothing seems to help

ChumleyEX

Hello everyone, I'm trying to get CCNA certified so I bought a 1721 off of someone. I turned it

on and it went right into rommon. I did some googling and I kept getting the magic number error etc. So I decided

to reload the bin file. I have loaded 2 different ones and they both do the same thing, they go back to rommon..

Short story

I setup the IP information for tftp, then I have it download the bin file, I think do something along the lines of either

b flash: (filename)

or

boot (filename)

it does it's thing, I type reset, it resets (sometimes 3 times in a row) and then

<rommon>

The Long story..

rommon 14 > tftpdnld

No, it's not normal for a router to restart 3 or 4 times.   It is normal for flash: to be the only device listed in "dev" since that's the only file system on the 1700.  There's nothing else that we can try until the RAM gets swapped out.

Unfortunately, I can't say why it's going to rommon, because all we get is this:

program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0xcde830
                                                              ý
System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(7r)XM1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

There should be some sort of error between those two lines.  Regardless, I would try two things.  First, reconfigure the configuration register to the default value ("confreg 2102" from rommon).  Then use the -r flag for tftpdnld which will bypass flash entirely and essentially do a tftpboot.  If it happens to successfully boot then, erase the flash (which will also format it), and download the image once again onto flash.  If it still doesn't work, I'd point my finger at the RAM in the router.

Neither seems to work. Is it normal for the router to restart 3 or 4 times in a row, also, should I have more than one thing listed when I type dev?

You must reset or power cycle for new config to take effect

Well I just ordered some more ram and I hope that solves the problem.

Get this man a cookie, sure enough, I swapped out the RAM and everything acted right. Thanks for the help.
