3550 WAN Routing issue

I am looking at a proposal that will use a 3550-24-EMI switch at the core, which in turn will connect up to twenty remote sites (over 10mb LES circuits). Each of these remote sites will have maybe two or three vlans. at each remote site, I can either use a 1760 router or another 3550 switch.

I have been told that there is a limitation to how many WAN routed vlans the 3550 can support (approx 16-18), but when I look at the documentation, all I can see is the standard 1005 vlan statements.

Can anyone help me out here?
