7206VXR slot occupation

Hello,

I have 7206VXR router with NPE400 processor module.

I need place in this router I/O controller GE+E module, PA-2FE-TX and PA-GE module.

If I do bandwith calculation, with whatever HW configuration result is, that bus BW is oversubscripted.

Question is, what have to be modules allocation in router to be functional.

In case bus BW is oversubscripted, what problems can it cause ?

Using software advisor when you choose this hardware config following error apppears:

ERROR #1 :

The bandwidth limits for this chassis have been exceeded. Please move a card to a different slot, or replace it with one of lower bandwidth, or select a different engine (NPE).

So it looks like that HW config is not supported.

So I think the only choice is to replace NPE400 by NPE-G1. Also, in this way, you won't need the PA-GE module, so NPE-G1 includes 3 Gigabit ports. Using this HW config, Advisor does not produce any error.

If you can buy another router with NPE-G1 that's fine.

If you cannot buy one soon, then maybe you can do some tricks.

First, I will say that I have seen 7206VXR router hardware configurations

that had not accounted for bandwidth calculations and had no problems for years.

So, the recommendations are certainly recommendations that should be in mind,

but the router will not really refuse such officially unsupported hardware configurations.

A warning (PACONFIG message) will only be issued.

I can only tell you what I would do, but cannot officially recommend it ;-)

The idea with this calculations is that you try to evenly distribute bandwith in the 2 buses,

and simultaneously do not exceed some limits.

Slots 0,1,3,5 are in the one bus and 2,4,6 on the other bus.

The GigabitEthernet in the I/O controller is fixed in slot 0.

I would insert the other GigabitEthernet PA in an even slot (2 or 4 or 6)

in order for the GigabitEthernets to occupy bandwidth of different buses.

Afterwards, the FastEthernets can be inserted anywhere,

preferably not in the same bus with the GigabitEthernet that is expected

to reach the highest rates.

p.s. Those 7200 GigabitEthernets cannot go too high anyway.

real situation is, that I can't buy new router nor new precessor (NPE-G1).

Your update is realy what I expected.

As I supposed, all calculations are done from maximum modules utilization.
