here is the output my a cat switch.
South_Korea(config-if)#switchport trunk encapsulation ?
dot1q Interface uses only 802.1q trunking encapsulation when trunking
isl Interface uses only ISL trunking encapsulation when trunking
I wonder why call "dot1q" for IEEE 802.1q
Do u know ?

dot1q with "dot" simply referring to the 802"."1q, in which "." in english is called "dot"
