Access VLAN with different VLANs configured on either side

Hi everyone,

Could somebody please explain to me how the following would work?

On a 6509 we have got VTP domain "ABC" configured with VLAN56. Out of this same switch is an access link for VLAN56 connecting to a 5500 in a differnt VTP domain. The 6509 side of the access link is configured for VLAN56 and the 5500 side is configured for VLAN1. Could anybody please explain how this would allow users on 5500 to access VLAN 56 on the 6509?

Many thanks in advance,

Daniel

Remember that a VLAN is a broadcast domain; the same as a free-standing switch.

If you had a stack of workgroup switches with no connections between them, it would roughly equate to a single large switch configured with VLANs. In either case, the broadcast domains are not connected.

On the stack of workgroup switches, if you were to connect two of them them with a jumper, you have merged the broadcast domains and traffic from either would propagate to both.

When you connect something to a VLAN-created broadcast domain as an access device, it joins that broadcast domain.

There may be other issues (like IP addressing @ layer 3), but the layer 2 connectivity exists and the L2 frames will propagate between them. I'd expect that you'll see some other errors pop up on the consoles (like VLAN mismatch) but, if the other parameters (like the IP addresses) are compatible, it should work.

FWIW
