Adding a static route

I am new to Cisco command line, so please excuse the basic question. I am working with a Cisco 2620 w/ IOS 12.1. I want to configure a static (default) route. I have tried doing so using the IP Route command, but when I do a SHOW IP ROUTE, it does not display my newly created route. What am I doing wrong?

Please help.

Is the route actually accessable, ie can you ping the next hop. If not, it will not be put in the route table.

No, the route is not accessible. I am bench configuring the router and then sending to be hooked up at a remote location.

Is there anyway to confirm that the route will show up once the T1 is connected?
