Cant ping router 2611

Im testing out an old router at work, for general curiosity.

I have done a simple config by giving e0/0 and e0/1 class b and c ip's.

What I want to do just start of with is ping those ethernet cards from a PC. I have plugged a patch cable from PC directly into the router and tried to ping one of the IPs but to no joy. I have also given my self a static IP and set the default gateway to the IP of the ethernet card and still no joy can any one give me some advice?

Just a little more infomation when Im logged on to the router via terminal emulation software I am unable to ping the interfaces from there

What is the state of the interfaces? (The easy way to get this is with show ip interface brief)

What kind of cable are you using for the connection? To connect a PC directly to the router you should be using a cross over cable. If you use a traditional straight through cable for the connection the devices will not be able to talk to each other and the router interface will report as down.
