our gateway x.y.z.1 is on a cisco 3620 router. In my system log, the message like the below happens several time a day for the last couple of weeks:

15-4-2002 10:23:58 WARNING NextHopRouter x.y.z.1 Is Not Responding to Ping

15-4-2002 10:24:05 INFO NextHopRouter x.y.z.1 up

The interval between not responding to up is about 4-20 seconds. It happens during the day, and at midnight as well. Cables have been changed, but not help.

Could any one gives hints how to troubleshooting this problem?

Tanks.

enable logging buffer on the router and check the router logs to see if any error

is reported.

do some 'sh inter ' and see if you have any drops.

Monitor the CPU, to see if during the non-response time you have a high cpu.

Make sure you run a recent software version.
