Hi,
which IOS will serve your router depens first on the hardware and flash memory and second on the IOS features wich will be needed. To get the hardware information enter the "show version" command on the command line interface. Most important is the info about the flash memory because
the size of the IOS must fit into the flash memory.
You also must identify the protocols you need (only IP or also IPX, Decnet etc.)
and features like running ISDN, NAT etc.
You best use the Software advisor tool:
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/CompNav/Index.pl
Hopefully you can use the tool with your guest account.
Once you have identified the IOS you can get the IOS from a CISCO reseller
like UNISYS.
Hope this helps

Hi,
at Your router prompt enter the command show version and check the following:
cisco 1601 (68360) processor (revision C) with 13824K/4608K bytes of memory - You have to have at least 12 MB of RAM to run IOS 12.1 on 1600 series,
Configuration register is 0x2102 - if Your value is different, router might not boot from flash and load ROM image (Boot Helper) instead. If it is different, in configuration mode enter the command config-register 0x2102 and reload Your router.
HTH
