Ciscoworks and CDP necessary?

The follwing is a comment from my co-worker:

<snip>

'In order for Campus Manager and the ANI Server to successfully discover neighboring Cisco devices, CDP must be enabled on selected interfaces.' With that said, neither option is part of the product suite we purchased so this argument of needing CDP is irrelevant.

<end snip>

I was under the impression that CDP is fairly insecure for one. And two, that ciscoworks operated mainly on SNMP RW strings. I am trying to justify that CDP is not necessary to our architecture. Can someone provide a link or documentation validating my argument.

If you don't want to use CDP or if CDP is disabled, then you'd need to add the devices individually as seed devices for discovery.
