Hi,
I just purchased a Cisco 1721 with an ADSL WIC and a 4-Port ENet card. I'm all ready to configure this but, ahem, where to begin? I don't mean with the config but just to telnet to the box from my Unix machine. They sent me a console cable which I can use with a PC but I don't have a PC. In fact, I'm using Mac OS X and figured I could just telnet into the box and get going.
But they don't even give me the box's name, or a username/password.
Um, help?
Thanks,
Jon

There aren't too many terminal-emulation software for Mac OS X, especially the 'free' ones,
unlike in OS 9.x. And you probably don't have a COM port on your Mac so you check out the following:

or just search for this topic: "Console connect to Cisco routers via minicom"
As advised from the other post, you will need a USB to serial adapter.
Check the following link for a sample product:
http://keyspan.com/products/usb/usa19w/
In case you're looking for other brands, just don't forget to verify that the adapter
will work on your current version of OS X. Some models doesn't support Panther yet.
Goodluck!

If this is a new router,it will not have any configs in it, which would mean, there is no ip address associated with it. So you wont be able to telnet into it, as long as you dont know the IP.
On your MAC machine, do you have a com port ? Probably you can browse the net to find a terminal emulation software. If you dont have a com port, but you do have a USB port, you can buy a USB to com port adapter and then connect the console cable to the adapter. Either ways you will need to use a termianl emulation software.

The Keyspan product worked great! However I couldn't get minicom to run. I would type minicom -s and it would just hang there. Running 10.3.3 btw.
So I got the beta copy of Zterm and works like a charm!
Thanks for the advice!
