Configuring a router as a frame relay router

I have several Paradyne frame savers (CSU/DSU)that according to pardyne can be managed by any"frame-relay router" according to the documentation I have to create a pvc dedicated for management.

The text reads:

The router to be used for management must configure a local pvc between the router and the frameSaver unit to support RFC 1490 or Cisco Encapsulation

Does anybody have any experience with these devices?

Hello Carl,

I think, what you need to do, is this.

1. Find out how to set a PVC say 1000 for management, on the Paradyne CSU. Usually most CSUs are menu oriented, and accessible via a console port. Once you set the management PVC on the CSU, 50 percent work should be done.

2. On the router, serial interface that attaches to the CSU, you can set the encapsulation to frame-relay and configure a pvc 1000 for local management.

If the frame-server doesnt support cisco encapsulation, it should definitely support IETF encap. So you can leave the CSU encap. to be its default (IETF) and set the encap. on the Cisco router, using the interface command, "encapsulation frame-relay ietf".

Cisco router has frame-relay switch support solely for lab purposes. I dont think they are ever used in real world scenarios.
