Connect modem to consol or aux

I am having diffuculty setting up a dial-in back up connection to a tiny 1720 router or any router for that matter. I get a connection but all I get on the hyper terminal is non-sense. I've tried all different settings on ht but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any ideas?

What do you mean by "dial-in back up connection?" Are you simply trying to dial into the console or aux port for admin with Hyperterminal? Because you can use aux for DDR but that is for "backup" communications to the extend that packets can be routed via the aux with a DDR setup. If you are just doing admin with hyperterminal, have you biased the data rate of your modems to your port rate (usually 9600)? Otherwise, the modems connect at variable speeds depending on line quality. This will give you garbled characters.

I highly recommend that you select the PDF version (upper right hand corner of the page). The graphics usually clear things up.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have since figured it out though. After intensive research, I found a page that says that that feature is not supported on the ancient routers that we have in our lab at school. Thanks for the help though. Next project: VPN tunnels. Weeeeeeeee!

I don't know to which routers you are referring but you mentioned 1720s in your original posting. Those are anything but ancient and I have dialed into the AUX port of a 1720 as recently as a month ago. Good luck with your next project.
