Design Connecting two VTP domains

Gents,

I'm after some feedback/advice on the best way to interconnect VLANS between VTP domains.

My current thought is to simply build an 802.1q trunk between the two VTP Domains. Vlans that need to span both domains would have the vlan added to the database on the server of each VTP domain (6509 and a 3550). The connecting trunk would be prunned to only allow a designated 'interconnecting' Vlan range to run between the two Domains.

I want to keep the segment layer 2. The reason for the seperate VTP domains is to increase the overall number of available VLANS and reduce the load of PVSTP.

Does anyone have any comments on this solution or an alternate proposal?

Thanks

Hi,

you do not need to seperate the load of PVST. The load is negligible. But what you want you can do better with one VTP Doamin and pruning is enable. Only on the switches which consist the vlans have the information.

The advantage from one vtp domain is that you can configure all vlans on one device. I would recommend you to use only one domain, when your requirements allowed this.

Peter
