When trying to assign an IP address to the fast ethernet 1, I receive the following message :
"ip addresses may not be configured on L2 link".
What am I doing wrong ?

Hi,
on a Layer 2 switch you cant assign IP address to Fastethernet ports. because they dont have a capability to act like routed ports or L3 ports.they are L2 ports.
But on L3 switches like 3550, 3750, 4500/6500 you can assign IP address to Fasthernet ports after making them routed ports. they act like router ports.

Hi,
Thank you for you're help, the switch module is in a cisco 1712 router. I'll check the cisco website to see if I can make them act like router ports.

I do not think you can configure each individual port as an L3 port using the 'no switchport' command on this particular switching module. The workaround is to have each port assigned to a unique VLAN and then configure SVIs (using the interface VLAN
