You can break up physical firewalls using vdoms in fortinet or contexts in ASAs so you can have multiple smaller firewalls segregated in one physical unit
Which components should be consider? ( throughput , interface capacity etc )
that depends on what you need in terms of interfaces but yes throughput is very important or you'll bottleneck the network if it cant process the volume of traffic your putting through
