How do I change the Startup-config without copying the running to startup?

I have a huge running config in a 7206vxr router (15,000 line long for the TN3270-server PU/LU config.) The startup-config is very basic with just enough commands to boot up and then it does a "boot network ftp......." to get the full running config.

I want to make a change to the basic startup config, but if I go into 'config t', make the change and then do a 'wr' then the router attempts to copy the huge running-config to the startup-config - and it is so big it gives me warning messages and fails .

So how can I make a change to the basic startup-config?

save the file and make the changes and tftp back to the start

Like copy tftp start
