HSRP issue

Hi there,

We are experiencing an odd HSRP issue. We are using two 4500 chassis switches, both equipped (per switch) with one MSFC2/PFC2.

The MSFC's are configured for HSRP and the following problem arise:

On one vlan both routers/MSFC's are active and one of them constantly sends coup messages (which is okay because it has an higher priority), but the other router does not send an resign message.

Can anybody help ?

Greetings,

Mathijs

Hello Mathijs,

you might have a spanning tree problem. Can you post the output of the command:

show span (IOS)

or

show spanning-tree (CatOS)

from both switches ?

Here is the official Cisco take on that probelm:

- STP loop conditions or instability in a network may prevent HSRP peers from communicating properly, possibly resulting in each peer becoming an active router. STP loops may cause broadcast storms, duplicated frames, and MAC table inconsistency, all of which affect the entire network, and especially HSRP. HSRP error messages may be the first indication of a STP issue -

Regards,

Georg
