Hi,
Quick question.
If you have two switches running HSRP, one with a higher priority and running as the active HSRP. Should you just use preempt on the highest priority switch ? I,ve seen configurations with preempt on the active and standby devices, but these are not tracking interfaces. Is having preempt on both, and not tracking interfaces an incorrect configuration ?
Thanks

If you're not tracking interfaces, then I can't think of a reason why you would need preempt set on the non-active router. But it doesn't hurt anything either. I usually turn it on any router running HSRP.

There is certainly good reason to specify preempt on the active (higher priority) router. There is less reason to need it on the second router, but I think it is a good idea. Especially if a third router (possibly with a lower priority) is introduced into the network having preempt on the second router may be needed.
