HSRP

A customer has two redundant Cat6506 with SUP1A plus MSFC.

On this MSFC are about 50 VLAN's defined with stanby groups.

Because the VLAN number and the standby group number can not be the same if the VLAN number is higher than 255.

I have to change the stanby group.

What is the best way?

All VLAN's in the same standby group or some standby groups with a number of VLAN's.

The standby group number has only significance for other standby-groups on the same segment/subnet. It is transmitted in a HSRP-specific multicast and so it does not cross a L3-boundary. Recipients are all HSRP-enabled routers on the same vlan AND in the same group. It is therefore allowed to use the same group-nr on all VLANs.

You need to use different group numbers only when you have more than one stanby-pair on the same subnet/segment/vlan.
