Installing flash with ROMMON

cbradleyspp

I have had to delete my IOS from flash due to it being corrupted. I have tried to go in and download the new IOS, but with no luck. I have set all required varibles for ROMMON and I get the error: "Missing or illegal ip address for varieble IP_ADDRESS Illegal IP address."

Here are the steps that I'am following:

rommon 1> IP_ADDRESS=10.0.0.5

rommon 2> IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.0.0.0

rommon 3> DEFAULT_GATEWAY=10.0.0.1

rommon 4> TFTP_SERVER=10.0.0.6

rommon 5> TFTP_FILE=c831-k9o3sy6-mz.123-7.T9

rommon 6> TFTPDNLD

Then the error comes up with the prompt that shows what varibles need to be set.

Am I forgetting something?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Carrick

P.S.

Router Specs:

Hardware: 831-SDM-K9-64

Memory: 32/8

IOS: 12.3(7)T9

Your IOS seems to support SDM. So thats good. Check this link which guides you to SDM installation on 800 series router.

Download the SDM installer on to your laptop from here.

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/sdm

and then double click the main exe file (i think its setup.exe) and it will ask you whether you want to install SDM on the router, or install the launcher on the PC as well sa SDM on the router and go through the wizard and it will push SDM files into the flash of the router. Takes about 5 minutes to get this done. Once this is done you should be able to browse to SDM web page of the router.

After you set the parameters, can you type set and show what is configured ?

It should show up as,

rommon 3 > set

PS1=rommon ! >

IP_ADDRESS=172.18.16.76

IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.192

DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.18.16.65

TFTP_SERVER=172.18.16.2

TFTP_FILE=c2600-i-mz

I only get "Output redirection is not support at this level".

Dunno if I'm putting in the command right: PS1=rommon!>?

Sorry there, I didn't realize that I only needed to type set.

Results:

PS1=rommon ! >

RET_2_RUTC=0

BSI=0

RANDOM_NUM=143993415

RET_2_RTS=

RET_2_RCALTS=

ip_address=10.0.0.5

ip_subnet_mask=255.0.0.0

tftp_server=10.0.0.6

tftp_file=c831-k9o3sy6-mz.123-7.T9

default_gateway=10.0.0.1

?=1

You need to set the parameters (all 5 of them) in CAPS. YOu have entered them in small alphabets. Reboot router, and re set all parameters in CAPS and tftpdnld should work.

Hi Carrick,

First try to change the DEFAULT_GATEWAY= to 10.0.0.6.

Secong you need to give the .bin extension in the TFTP_FILE. It will be:

TFTP_FILE=c831-k9o3sy6-mz.123-7.T9.bin

Hope this helps.

If it does not works please post the exact error message you are getting.

Regards,

Sushil

Every time I have done the file transfer via tftpdnld, I have used the .bin extension. But all the examples on CCO show that you dont need them. I have tried without the .bin extension to confirm this, but I guess you dont need it.

Shanky, RIGHT ON!!! I was not setting the varibles in CAPS. Right as I put then in caps I tftpdnld worked. Got my IOS in there but still working on a few things with getting SDM installed.

Heres where I'm at. I set int eth0 to 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0 no shut, set int fa1 to no shut, assign my NIC 10.10.10.2 address with the correct mask and gateway. I can ping from my computer to the router but the SDM first time install does not find the page or host 10.10.10.1. Not sure If there is a different IOS to put in since my Original IOS was 12.3(8)T7, which is now DF, the replacement is 12.3(8)T8, I don't have enough memory for this IOS.

Thank you very much with the help. I greatly appreciate it,

Carrick

Are yoy using the SDM installer from your PC to write the SDM files into flash ? I have had issues the first few times I tried installing SDM on a 2800. Try it a couple of times, and we will go from there.

Still have no luck.

Goto launch first time router setup. Error 404: Page could not be found. Using default settings for install. IP for eth1 is 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0 with no shut. I then went directly to the http://10.10.10.1 and shows the Cisco Systems Accessing Cisco C831 "Router" Page.

Webflash shows nothing in the router. Launch with SDM on my pc, wont launch, just goes to the page then the popup page comes at and closes.
