Greetings,
We are about to connect a 6509 to an existing network that consists of a single 5509 wtih dual sups and rsfcs. The idea is to have the 6509 do most of the work and leave the backup role to the 5509. Each floor is a separate vlan connected to the 5509 via a gig port. HSRP is currently used to provide router redundancy. I have read a great many documents from the Cisco site regarding best practises and how-to's, and hope most of the bases are covered. I have tried to duplicate the existing network using a 4006 in place of the 5509 and verify that things work the way I think they work, but that was very limited. The current network has been very stable for the last three years, with no reported response time/availability issues at all. The important networking devices are being monitored by CIscoWorks, with nothing to report. Before going live, I thought I would post this to see if anybody has had problems implementing something like this.
Thanks for any comments.
Trent.
Equipment list
6509 with 2 sup2/MSFC2s sup2 SW 7.3(1), msfc2 12.1(13)E3
5509 with 2 sup2g/rsfcs sup2g SW 5.1(2a), rscf 12.0(7)W5(16)
Here is the way things will be after the 6509 is introduced:
All network equipment is Cisco.
23 vlans defined on each switch
6509 root switch for all VLANs, 5509 secondary.
6509 and 5509 connected together via 2 gig ports, channeling and trunking.
19 of the vlans will be allowed to cross the trunk.
Access switches are 3524 XLs with a gig link to both 6509 and 5509, no trunking.
VTP mode is transparent
The second gig port on each 3524 should be in STP blocking state, uplinkfast enabled.
6509 MSFC2-1 is active router for half of the VLANS and standby for the other half, MSFC2-2 same.
5509 RSFC-1 standby and RSCF-2 standby.
There are 2 vlans that have server connections, for approx 40-50 devices.
File/print/email services are clustered and somewhat load balanced (adaptive) with 4 connections to each switch (Novell environment).
Database and application servers will be clustered and load balanced with connections to each switch (HPUX, Oracle, Weblogic).
Single attached servers will be moved to the 6509.

I don't see any issue in bringing a 6509 into the existing network. Make sure that the configurations in the new switch will not conflict the existing setup.
