Is 802.1q tagging done in the ASIC?

From what I am reading, one advantage to using ISL over 802.1q would be that ISL is processed in the ASIC and 802.1q is not. Is this true?

Anyone have a link to test results that compare the performance of 802.1q and ISL?

Thanks,

Ryan
