I don't have much experience in network management and would like some advice from those who have been working with network management for a longer time.
I need a free tool for monitoring the network. The network consists of 1 3550 swicth, 12 2950 and a 1721 router. We are using CMS, but I need a tool for monitoring the internet link, broadcasts sources etc..
I've search and found some tools like, mrtg, ntop rddtools, cricket, bigbrother, network assistant.. but I am confused which one to choose.
TIA

hello ..
MRTG is a free tool and can monitor the bandwidth, CPu usage etc.. this is a good tool, but you should be good in perl , scripting etc.. if you want the network topology, try using whats up gold.. it can give you the entire topology and monitor all the components.. it can give you an alert when anything goes down..
for monitoring other things, you can try using netsmaart. this is a very good nms tool..
at last, you can explore solar winds.. superb one !!
my preference will be:
mrtg (for basic data collection)
solar winds ( advanced nms options like configuration management)
netsmaart (costly, but efficient)
