Here is what the sceario looks like

We have two Cat 6509 with Dual Sup720 for redundancy. We would like to use the one of the port from each supervisor engine to form the etherchannel.

My question is that since the second sup 720 is being used for failover only. Could the GIG port on this supervisor still forward the packets as being the part of etherchannel eventhough the supervisor itself is in standby mode? pls provide reference documents and sample config if possible.

You can use the standby Supervisor uplink ports. Even though the Supervisor is in standby, the uplink ports are active and like any other port in the chassis.
