Modbus TCP/IP connection to IR809G

Good day, Fellow Cisco Friends.

I am new to this forum. I need some advice on the IR809G. I have a PLC communicating via Modbus TCP/IP to another Modbus system. My client now wants to include a IR809G to communicate over the local Telecom Service Provider's 4G network. So my questions are:

1. Which port does the Modbus TCP/IP (from PLC) connect to?

2. Which port do i use to connect to the 4G network?

Thanks in advance

Hello @WesleySG

Modbus TCP/IP typically uses port 502 for communication. This is the default port, but it can be configured differently based on the specific setup. Ensure that the PLC is configured to use the correct port, and make sure that any firewalls or security policies allow traffic on that port.

The IR809G router does not inherently "connect" to a specific port on the 4G network like a device connects to a port in a switch. Instead, it establishes a connection to the mobile network through a SIM card. The router communicates with the 4G network using standard networking protocols.
For outgoing communication from the IR809G to the internet or other networks, there are no specific ports that you need to configure for 4G. Outbound traffic is typically not restricted based on ports by the mobile network provider. You should configure cellular interface with the appropriate sim operator configuration.
If your application involves incoming connections to the IR809G from the internet (e.g., for remote management), you might need to consider any port forwarding or firewall configurations. However, this is not specific to the 4G network but rather to your overall network setup.

No problem! To connect your Modbus TCP/IP-enabled device to the IR809G router, you would typically connect it to one of the router's LAN ports, not the WAN port. The WAN port is usually used for connecting to the internet or an external network.

Connect the RJ45 Ethernet port of your Modbus TCP/IP device to one of the LAN ports on the IR809G router. This is typically labeled as Ethernet or LAN on the router. Check the IR809G router's configuration to ensure that the LAN port you've connected to is configured appropriately. It might be set up as a switch port by default.

If your Modbus TCP/IP device communicates using RS485 and you need to convert it, then you would need an RS485 to Ethernet converter. In this case, you'd connect the RS485 side to the S0 or S1 serial ports on the router.

Thank you for the reply. I apologise for the confusion on the port. I meant do I connect the RJ45 of my Modbus TCP/IP to the WAN physical ports or do I need to convert to RS485 and connect to S0 or S1?

Just to confirm. I need to connect my RJ45 from Modbus TCP/IP (PLC) to the GigaEthernet ports (GE0 or GE1) port of the IR809. Coz S0 and S1 are for RS232/RS485 DCE and RS232 DTE.
