MP-BGP/BGP in the enterprise Datacenter or Core

As I begin the redesign of the corporate network core I really need to ask, are people really running BGP in the datacenter/enterprise Core? How are you adjusting the convergence time since BGP is designed to be a SLOW protocol for convergence.

Most of the customers I have worked with run BGP on an edge router rather than running BGP in the core. And most of them accept BGP convergence time as it is, choosing scalability and stability for external routes over the faster convergence of an IGP.
