MTRJ-SC Connection on 4506 / 2950G

I have a 4506 w/Sup Engine 4, 18 1gb ports on one end and 2950G switches on the other end of a fiber connection. The fiber patch panels are MTRJ out, I have GB SC Cisco connectors in the 4506 and 2950G. I cannot get a link on either end. I am using a MTRJ-SC patch cable. I have used ports with configs on them and ports with no configs. I should get a link regardless as long as the port is not shutdown, correct? Is there something I'm missing, is there a special patch cable to link the ends?

Switch to switch; you need to cross over the connection. Its not hard on the mt-rj to sc cable. Separate the two halfs of the sc connector and swap them.

I did try that and still no luck.

Use a small flashlight and shine the light into one end of the cable and watch for it on the other end of the cable. You should see the light.

BE VERY CAREFUL if you try this on the cable plant since it is possible that some pairs are swapped and you could be looking at an invisible laser that can dammage your eyes.

For a standing plant, it's safer to put a piece of thin paper in from of the port: enough light will make it through that you can see the dot on the safe side of the paper.

Also make sure your GBICs are the same type (SX, LX, etc).

The connectors are not your problem (unless you're trying to feed multimode into a single mode fiber, or vice versa).

Just a thought, you do need to have the ports configured in a vlan that is in the vlan data base or as a trunk or the switch will disable it.
