network monitoring

Hi community,

We took a look at the available network monitoring tools, and we'd like to implement an opensource one in our network, which is has circa 300 Cisco nodes (router and switches) and at least 3000 interfaces.

Since we need icmp/SNMP polling with 'rrd' backend, syslog analysis, SNMP trap management, we'd like to know if somebody have an experience to share with a specific tool in a similar network environment, for example with OpenNMS or JFNMS. Considering that we'd like to use a well suited dedicated hardware, based on an i386 architecture with (if possible) Gnu/Linux as OS, are there any known limitations (ex.: number of host monitored)?

Hi Dario,

You might give NMIS (http://www.sins.com.au/nmis/) a try. I am using it with about the number of nodes and interfaces you have mentioned on a Dual-Xeon 3GHz Linux system with (rather important!) a SCSI disk subsystem. For syslog analysis I am using "swatch" and "snmptt" for SNMP trap management/analysis.

Best regards, David
