New VIP2-50 with port adapters causes c7513 to hang

Hello all,

I'm looking for ideas as to possible causes for this problem: After installing a new VIP2-50 with two port adapters (a DS3+serial and a PA-POS-OC-3-SMI) in a c7513, the router itself hangs and becomes unresponsive. The solution is to remove the VIP and then reboot (b/c the router is still unresponsive even after removing the VIP). I suspected possible VIP hardware failure but this problem has happenned using two VIP2-50s now. Could incompatibility of hardware (i.e., the VIP itself or its port adapters) with the system image file possibly cause this problem? I am looking for any ideas as to possible causes.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Were you able to get any output from the console when you inserted this VIP?

I see nothing wrong with your HW configuration here that jumps out at me.

Did you try another slot in your 7513? If you can gather something from the console when you do this we might be able to help you ID the problem better.

Hope this helps,

Don

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've gathered much output via console and recorded it in .txt files for reference. One notable piece of information is that when I tested these VIP2-50s in a test c7507 router, I saw tracebacks and some errors after installing it in the test router -- however, when installing the VIP in the c7513, I do not get any output ... the router just hangs and remains unresponsive until reload.

Thanks.

Could you send me your output txt files, as well as your tracebacks (need your IOS version / image name to decode these) and I might be able to shed some light on this problem if you like.

Regards,

Don
