Yes, authentication is handled at layer 2 (along with everything else PPP). I'm still not sure what you mean by circuit-mode or packet-mode...I think of the two options as packet mode (with a defined structure) and non-packet mode, where it is just a stream of data, without a format or structure.

I'm not sure of the importance of the question; ie, are you having problems, or working on some theory or spec?
