i have my pc with OS win2000 server, with two ethernet card , on which one is used for my LAN ( with 10.*.*.* class local LAN ip) and second card used as globle ip (202.*.*.* globle ip of intenet leased line) . This globle card have direct cat5 cabel connection from ISP E2 modem ( placed near node of my office ,100 meter far from my office. ) i had run winproxy on my pc for internet use of my office users. On proxy local ip 10.*.*.* is internal ip and 202.*.*.* is external ip configured.

now problem occur when i dial from my pc a dial-up connection to my center office for FTP . the internet was totally cutt-off. even though i can ping the gateway of ISP. but cann't ping yahoo, etc. and browsing totally stops.

i had no config gateway of my WAN network on internal card 10.*.*.*

on route print command on dos promt it shows the dialup connection ip on 1 route. how can i browse intenet with dial-up to my center office is going.

please sortout the problem .......

very thanks in advance !!!!

If you look at the TCP setup for your dialup connection you will probably see a checkbox set under advanced general settings that says use default gateway on remote network. That is making the dial connection override you lan default gateway. You can verify this by doing a route print while you are dialed in. You normal default route will have a metric of 2 and the dial link will be a default with metric 1. Uncheck the box and add static routes for the network you are ftping to using the route command in dos window.

thank's jackson ! the problem is solved now i can ftping to my center office on intenet is going also !!!

i have one prob also. one first lan card i donn't put gatway of my router to connect to WAN network of my main offices. if i put the gateway on local ip lan card some time WAN network connect and that time internet stops and when intenet is going through globle card , the WAN network connectivity is break.

what will i do? the metric number is the solution ? or any thing else.

please solve it ,

big thanks in advance !!!!

Abhishek.

I'm not sure I follow the explanation of the problem but basically it sounds like the same issue you have when you did the dial ups.

Any host can only have one functioning default gateway. You can define backups but they have a higher metric and are only used if the lower metrics are down (not just when they cant reach a host). When a host has two interfaces (or three when you add the dialup) you need to decide which way the default route should point. The logical choice when the internet is involved is to point to the internet link because there are so many unknown destinations out there.

With the default pointed to the internet the other interfaces can only talk to hosts that are on the same ip network as the attached interface. To reach networks beyond those attached networks you need to add static routes.

Lets say nic1 goes to the internet nic2 goes to the inside network and dial1 goes to the ftp site. The inside network is 10.1.1.0/24 and all of the other inside networks are in the 10.x.x.x range. The ftp site is 172.31.1.0/24.

point the default route to the internet through nic1,

add a static route to 172.31.1.0/24 through dial1,

add a static route to 10.0.0.0/8 through nic1 pointed at an interior router.

If the interior is not as simple as all 10.x.x.x networks you may need to add multiple static routes pointing to the different interior networks.

It gets complicated as your interior network changes. It's much easier to use a router as the gateway because it learns routes to the other destinations.
