Problems 2948G_L3 used as Traditional Layer 2 switch

I acquired 2 2948G_L3s, for which we had no use for other than as access switches in our lan. They were configured with all ports in bridge group 1, with spanning-tree disabled, except for 2 ports which form a port-channel uplink to a 6509.

I have had far more problems with these than with my 3548XL's. In an NT network we have users having PDC problems, slow transfer rates from servers, can't map drives, etc.

So my question is -

Assuming my configuration is as good as it will get to make these router/switches into traditional swithces, has anyone else had any issues with these similar to mine, and is this the best performance I can expect from the 2948_L3's in a layer 2 topology ?

P.S. BVI 1 is my management IP interface, and bridge

group 1 is my "vlan", does this make a difference ?

I would try to enable spanning tree on all ports. I've noticed some strange behaviour of 2948G_L3 in the case SPT was off.
