Problems accessing 4948's

Hi,

We have recently installed 3 4948's for a customer network. These were trunked to their 3662's. They specified using a different Vlan (Vlan24), than Vlan1 so we made sure the trunk link specfied this as the native vlan.

We had specified the default gateway as the HSRP address from the 3662, and could ping/telnet to router fine.

If we tried to ping anything beyond the router it would fail , and the debug from the switch would say 'unroutable'

To get this working from the switch, I had to set a gateway of last resort , pointing to the HSRP address on the 3662.

Why did'nt the ip default-gateway command work ?

To say it simple: the ip default gateway is only used for the internal ip stack, not for routing client traffic. The command reference says:

To define a default gateway (router) when IP routing is disabled, use the ip default-gateway command in global configuration mode. To disable this function, use the no form of this command.

When the switch temporarily has no routing capabilities, you use an ip default gateway to instruct the ip stack where to send traffic. You only use this for basic setup of the system in case of emergencies.
