whenever I type "clock rate 64000" in the router 2500,

it shows "ambiguous command: clock rate 64000".

It seems quite right, isnt it?

what is the problem?

thanks!

hi han,

pls tell that in which mode ur device it should be dce mode, pls check and revert.

hi, handsome,

This interface is used to link to another router, both in s0, both 2500 series, is it enough info?

i think it is DCE, i honestly dont know, how can i tell?

thanks!

Hi, Handsoe,

thanks, this is running config for router1, another one is basically the same,

Can you find what is wrong?

hi han,

see when u are connecting two devices via serial ports, then one device has to be in DCE mode and the other has to be in DTE mode, you can find out that which device is DTE or DCE by:

#sh controller serial 0 command.

Basically,we have two types of devices that can communicate over a serial interface. DCE and DTE. A DCE provides a physical connection to a network then forwards traffic. A DTE connects to a network through a DCE device.

And if you want to change a DTE device to a DCE or vise versa you can use a device called a null modem adapter.Null modem adapter will change the wiring so that a DCE device will look like a DTE device or make a DTE device look like a DCE device.

thanks, handsome,

i applied show controller s 0 command, and it gave me the following info:

q1.i see there is "HD unit 0,V.35 DCE cable", does it mean this router is in DCE mode?

q2. I am using netsim now, a virtue lab, I think it can simulate what you said, and change the mode, but how? do you know this?

thanks agian.

a 1) yes it means it is in dce mode and u should be able to set the clock rate for that.

a 2) is the above config which has been mentioned twice of one router only or both the routers? If it is of only one router (which it appears to be as it is router1 only) then check the controller of the other router or simulator you have.

Hi, thanks,

Please look at the following info I've got. any advice would be appreciated.

1. My job is simple connect Router1 and Router3 with serial 0 ports on both routers. Under the command "show controller s 0", one Router1 showed as DCE, Router3 DTE.I assigned two Ip for both end. 175.10.1.1/24 and 175.10.1.2/24;

2. after assigning IP, I typed "clock rate 64000", then it said "Ambiguous Command: clock rate 64000",

3. after fail this command, I tried "no shut" anyway. the router said:

(config-if)#no shut

%LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial0, changed state to up

%LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial0, changed state to down

"

Hi,

"ambiguous" means, that there is a choice of possible commands of (in a certain way) similar spelling.-

Enter in interface config mode "clock ?", "clock rate ?" and "clock rate 64000 ?". The response will be interisting. Is there no further command to choose - and I know no possible command on a 2500 router in this mode - there is a software bug.

I have tested your config and your inputs, as well as other possibilities with no unusual results. Your "ambigous command" message is a very unusual result.

Hi,

to solve the problem I would suggest the following procedure:

1. Exchange the roles of the routers by exchanging the cable ends.

2. Use the "no clock rate 64000" command on the existing (up to now) DCE router and the "clock rate 64000" on the new DCE router (the old DTE router) in each case in the interface config mode.

If there are no issues (and this should be in case the new DCE has another system image file in its flash memory) the problem is fixed for the moment.

First you know now the problem cause definitely, and second you could fix the problem for ever.

3. Do this if you want by copying the image file from the flash memory of the new DCE to a TFTP server (e.g. a Windows workstation/notebook) with the "copy flash tftp" command and copy then this system image file with the "copy tftp flash" to the old DCE router flash memory. (Check the space of the flash memory of the old DCE before with the "show flash" or "dir" command in global config mode. Note: If not enough space available, you cannot simple clear the current image file! You need instead a bigger flash memory.)

Regards,

hjmacholl

Thanks, Guys,

I've solve that question by bypassing it.

cheers!
