Router 3640 IOS 12.4(25b) [Issues]

Hi all!,

I'm a beginner on Cisco systems, in fact I'm being learning about CCNA for the last weeks in order to get the certification in a few months.

The reason for this post is related to issues that I have been experiencing with a Cisco Router 3640-IX-M that sometimes crashes (not being able to write any command sometimes) on my terminal session when it finishes the booting up process.

The router has been restored to defaults but anyway it shows the messages as follows:

I have performed some actions in order to identify if any interface is causing issues disconnecting all of them and then turning on the router again, the messages after booting up process are the following:

Then, if I starting to connect interfaces (shutting down the router and then turning on again) one bye one... it shows messages again.

Could router has a problem with the IOS installed?

I will appreciate any suggestion in order to solve this issue.

Hi

This a legacy router, the message: %SNMP-5-COLDSTART: SNMP agent on host Router is undergoing a cold start could be generate for a lack of power (lost of power). It could be a bug or the power supply is not working properly. 

To identify the cause you can submit the command line: show version, it could indicate a problem.

Respondí los mensajes anteriores pero creo que lo hice a un solo mensaje. He ejecutado el comando que me has pedido y el resultado está adjunto.

Te comento que he tenido que dejar el router encendido desde ayer hasta hoy para poder ingresar por primera vez, ahora es completamente operativo en la consola, sigue mostrando los mensajes al iniciar como les indiqué primeramente.

Pareciera mas que es un Bug en el IOS, voy a buscar mas informacion.

I think your problem is  related to the logs associated with the intefaces e1/t1:

*Mar 1 00:00:12.179: E1T1 x/0 IOS: Failed to initialize.

I think there is an IOS problem associated to this kind of logs but as Julio suggest please provide the "show ver" output in order to see the reload reason (this will provide more information to us), so If I was you I would try to upgrade the IOS, but this is a very old device so maybe will be difficut to you to find another IOS. 

The SNMP Log usually means that the router has cold started, meaning that the router had lost its power and then regained its power, this is perfectly normal if the device was restarted, anyway you can provide the "show env" so we can see if there is a problem with the power supplies.

Como puedo ver, hablamos español todos, así que voy a escribir en español nomás, cuando hice el post pensé que era solo en inglés, disculpen por eso.

Voy a ejecutar lo solicitado en el router y les voy a enviar los resultados, pero lamentablemente puede ser que hasta el lunes no tenga acceso ya que el equipo se encuentra en el laboratorio de telecomunicaciones en la universidad donde estoy estudiando ingeniería.

Les cuento un poquito porque surgen estas dudas y el nivel de beginner que tengo... ( xD ). Este router forma parte de un lote de equipos que fueron donados por una empresa hace unos meses. También hay otros routers y switches series 2800, 2900, 1700, 7200 vxr, entre otros, varios.

Yo particularmente estoy armando dos topologías simples que constan de un router, un switch y un modem satelital para emular dos remotas satelitales y comunicarlas mediante antenuadores, (es posible tmb que considere emular un telepuerto y multiples remotas). Con esto armaría una maqueta para la universidad para que los alumnos puedan ensayar algunos troubleshooting básicos, realizar modificaciones y elaborar trabajos prácticos tanto con los equipos Cisco como con la parte de RF satelital.

El límite propio, que es por el cual lo hago e intento perfeccionarme, es que no tengo mayor conocimiento de estos sistemas en configurarlos y armar las topologías si bien he trabajado solucionando problemas simples en equipamiento Cisco, fui NOC Operator hasta hace un tiempo, pero no llegué a profundizar en estos conocimientos. Por esto a su vez mientras voy armando, estoy haciendo un curso de CCNA, (simple nomás, no el oficial, pero me sirve por ahora y considero rendir el certificado más adelante). El asunto es que al ser usados los equipos y algunos bastante viejos (posiblemente algunos descartados por alguna razón), me he encontrado con mensajes en los IOS medios extraños, como les mencioné y estos no se mencionan por ahora en los cursos que hago y no encuentro gente que pueda ayudarme diciéndome que son exactamente (mucho menos la solución), por eso recurro a este foro y agradezco la ayuda que me están brindando, mi idea es volverme un miembro activo a medida que vaya aprendiendo y perfeccionando.

Les consulto

¿Son estos equipos aptos y vigentes como para armar estas maquetas?, ya que me mencionaron que son equipos legacy (supongo que esto se refiere a que son antiguos).

¿me sirven para aprender y llegar a rendir el CCNA adecuadamente?

¿Saben como puedo encontrar material que me ayude a dar solución a diferentes errores o mensajes que surgen en el IOS? (Manual o guía de troubleshooting por ejemplo)

Por cierto, es probable que el cold start sea causado por mi, ya que lo estoy reiniciando repetidamente tras apagarlo y prenderlo para cambiarle interfaces tratando de identificar si es alguna la que falla por los mensajes que me muestra, nunca había visto que muestre un dispositivo cisco esos mensajes de que me tira todas las interfaces o que fallen al iniciar, que las luces enciendan pero quizás con una alarma, cosas por el estilo.

Otra cosa que sucede es que muchas veces el arranque queda tildado y no importa cuanto reinicie el router, muestra esos mensajes y luego no avanza más, por más que presione Enter o lo que sea, no me aparece el nombre del equipo ni el cursor, quizás tras esperarlo un buen tiempo reacciona y puedo ingresar comandos, pero muchas veces eso no es posible. Y cuando ingresa, una vez que lo hace y puedo operarlo, no importa cuantas veces lo reinicie, ingresa bien... luego de los mensajes, obviamente.

Pero me ha pasado de apagarlo de un día para el otro y pasa lo mismo nuevamente hasta que me dá acceso y ahí puedo operarlo, por lo que he decidido no cortarle la energía eléctrica cuando me voy, lo dejo encendido.

Estaba acostumbrado a que todo funciona sobre ruedas y nunca nada falla, parece que voy a golpearme un poco con estos equipos jaja
