I am doing some testing on spanninig-tree and thought that BPDU's traveled down Vlan 1 to the other switch in the span session is that correct.

STP BPDU traverse each VLAN including vlan 1 to build a tree for each LAN.
Are you running RAPID or MSTP or 802.1d ?

We are running uplinkfast and pvst mode.
We are only running one span session not multispan or any domains.
