Switch Failure

I had somene put a patch cable from one port to another port on a little DLINK switch and it shut down our Cisco 3550 Switches.I pulled out the cable on the the amber light and it started to work again.Was that a short or somethinkg from the cable on the DLINK?

When they put the patch cable between two ports of the DKINK they created a loop in the layer 2 network. The 3550 stopped working in reaction to the loop and started working again when the loop was broken.

Thanks for info,I thought it was that..That is an easy way to mess up someones network A?Had me stumped for a while...
