I have a catalyst 3548xl in a lab with windows 98 and 2000 clients. The windows 98 machines have no problem logging in but the windows 2000 will not log in. I have the switchport for the 2000 machine configured switchport access vlan 6, spanning tree portfast and I have the duplex and speed hardcoded at 100 and duplex full on the switch and the nic. WHen i take out the switchport access vlan 6 cmd the machine logs in fine but it does not get an ip address, so i put in the switchport access vlan 6 cmd and do i relese on the machine and I get an ip. THen i log off and back on again and the machine just sits at the log on screen.

Looks like you definately need to be in VLAN 6 for this machine to get on the network.

Is this happening only on this host or other Win 2000 Clients as well?

Are you sure portfast is configured under interface?

Any difference when speed and duplex are both set to auto on the Switch and NIC?

It seems as if the ios i was running 120.5.2-xu was not running correctly. i upgraded the ios and now it is working fine.
