TCP ports used for http with proxy

Hi all

I am using an RMON probe with Traffic Director for some analysis on our LAN

I have observed some unexpected results when using a proxy server. If a proxy server is used, then I do not see any http traffic coming from my host workstation - all I see is IP traffic. However, if I disable the proxy server setting through my browser then I am able to see http traffic (this is not what I would expect)

I would have thought that my host would communicate with the proxy server on port 80, but this doesn't appear to be the case

Has anyone seen this phenomenon before ?

Many thanks in advance for any help

Marcus

Sniffed and found that all traffic to the proxy server used port 8080, so the traffic from the proxy to the internet must be using port 80 instead - I should have know this !

Cheers
