Trunking vs Routing?

Hi people,

Just a problem that needs a quickly clarification.

Firstly, for inter-VLAN communication, one needs a router? Right? But for Trunking allows for Inter-VLAN communication between switches using ISL or dot1q, right? Does it mean that Trunking works within the same network while routing (i.e. InterVLAN communication) works for inter-networking? Or am i missing something?

Hi Friend,

For intervlan routing yes you need a router infact a layer 3 device now it can be a router or a layer 3 switch.

If you have a router you will configure subinterface on router and configure each subinterface with dot1q or isl and the port coming from router on a witch port will be configured as a trunk port which will be isl or dit1q.

Yes you have to configure trunk on switch with dot1q or isl to carry all the vlan information from the switch to the router for getting inter vlan routing done.

Trunking is just layer 2 technology for carrying information of more than one vlan and router with sub interface will understand tagged frames from switch and will route between different vlans.
