user tracking on CWorks 3.2

Dear All,

i don't have vlas configured on my site..my core switch is catalyst4507r and access switches are 3500 series.we have also DHCP server and also some static IPs.

the problem in user tracking in cisco works, i got full inofrmation about some users (mac add, ip add , hostname) and other users only (mac address)..

why it only shows mac addresses. i need full info about user (mac, ip add, hostname).

is the problem that i don't have VLans or Layer 3 switching?

should i have Layer3 switching first enabled and vlans on the core switch?

thnx.

The User tracking uses the switch to gain the mac address, it then queries all the routers in the ANI database for ARP information to get the Mac address to IP mapping, then it performs a reverse lookup on the IP address to get the hostname.

In your case, are all the routers for the network Cisco and managed via Cisco Works? If so, is it possible that the mac address in question does not have an IP bound to it? This is often the case when you use NIC redundancy in a load balancing or failover capacity. The OS on the machine creates an additional mac address for the virtual single NIC and both of the NICs real macs may show up in user tracking with no IP.

If you find one of these devices, make sure that its default gateway is Cisco and in Campus Manager and that it has IP bound to it. If you find out that it was a different issue, let us know!

Good Luck,

Carlo

Many thnx for ur reply.

But my client machines doesn't have dual NIC. and i don't have routers or layer 3 switching enabled in my network.

so i have to create vlans and enable layer3 switching on my 4507R switch, so i can get ip addresses and hostnames?

or what is the problem exactly with user tracking?it get information about some users and others no.

regards,

mhasanomar,

Is the default gateway of the clients a router? Is it in Cisco Works? If you say you have no routers

(or layer 3 switching) in your network, I am suprised that user tracking is able to work with any hosts. This is a requirement as the router (default gateway of clients) is the device that reveals the mac-address to IP address mapping. Without it you will be in the situation that you are in now, with no names or IP addresses.

How is the network set up if you have not routing devices? You have 1 flat subnet with no outside connectivity? How do you get to the Internet?

Carlo

For now we don't have any remote sites. we have internet connectivity through 1700 perimeter router on the outside interface of the pix firewall.

and internally a flat simple network with one subnet as u c.

so i think the sole solution i setup vlans and enable layer3 switching on catalyst 4507R core switch?

mhasanomar,

You are correct, the UT can not query the PIX so make at least 1 VLAN on the 4507R and give it the default gateway address while pointing its default route back to the pix. This will then get UT to populate the hostnames.

Good Luck,

Carlo
