vlsm, supernetting, cidr in VLANs

Hi,

We are running out of address space in our LAN and using supernets/vlsm/cidr would seem to be the logical next step so that we can 'combine' several nets to expand the dhcp scope.

Is this a standard practice? Are there any problems with MS operating systems? We have 2000 running on most of the stations but there are a few 98's still out there. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who is doing this now.

Shouldn't be any problem at all. Windows should take a mask like 255.255.252.0 with no issues.

It will work. We currently use similar masks. Another option would be to introduce private addressing such as using 10.0.0.0/8. Or subnet that up all you want. As long as the hosts that you assign these private addresses to do not need to be reached from outside of your network, and you have a proxy device at your edge(usually a firewall), than your fine. Using this scheme, you will never run out of addresses.
