What causes output errors on an Ethernet interface

I just like to find out what causes the output errors to go up on an Ethernet interface? All other counters are clear and I am just wandering if this causes the FTP to timeout/fail.

Thanks in advance.

Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is QUICC Ethernet, address is 0003.6b56.7dd9 (bia 0003.6b56.7dd9)

Internet address is --omitted--

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:02, output 00:00:02, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters 19:07:44

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops

5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

28308 packets input, 2009134 bytes, 0 no buffer

Received 27684 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

8528 packets output, 930106 bytes, 0 underruns

23 output errors, 4442 collisions, 0 interface resets

0 babbles, 0 late collision, 446 deferred

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier

Most likely is a duplex mismatch: Verify that the duplex setting on each end agrees (both full or both half ... in some cases, you have to set it at auto).

Next most likely is your cabling. If it was hand-made, you may not have pinned it out according to the EIA/TIA specs (i.e., 568b = orange-white, orange, green-white, blue, blue-white, green, brown-white, brown .... with the clip down / away from you).

If the cable was made then you have a split pair on pins 3 & 6, which kills the crosstalk resistance of the cabling.

If this is an old router with an AUI port, you may have the "SQE" (hearbeat) enabled. It should be disabled.

Those are ~ top three usual problems.

Good Luck
