What merits a Layer 3 switch

Hi,

I have a client, 200 users - one segment, remote areas connected with fiber to hubs (10mbps at that)

What delineates the need to consider Layer 3 Switch? I know multiple Vlans, multiple subnets, would.

I think A good catalyst platform with fiber blades will let me look at gig ethernet to switch (not hub) and I can pass down from there... considering replacing as many runs to be "home runs" is an option I am pursuing as well.

Alex,

Performance and flexibility would warrant a Layer 3 capable switch. 200 users is not alot so you might be able to do this with one flat switched network and go out to an external router, if needed (router on a stick). What kind of switch you need/require would be based on number of port requirement and type (GIG/ATM/POS/etc) of ports required. Possibly the 4000 series might be the switch for you but again this will be highly dependant on # of ports and types required and of course budget.

Hope this helps,

Don
