What's the best way to default route/gateway

In a LAN (192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0) we have one Cisco PIX (192.168.1.252) to the WAN (a VPN tunnel to other departments) and one Novell proxy server (192.168.1.3) with a second interface (12.34.56.78) connected to a router (12.34.56.79) for internetconnection.

We have also an (old) cisco router 3600 isdn in the LAN (192.168.1.254), but we don't use them for routing since we have a VPN connection between our departments.

What gateway should we configure for the workstations?

The routing table should be:

0.0.0.0 => 192.168.1.3 (default)

192.168.0.0 => 192.168.1.252

I think we can use the PIX or the Proxyserver or the old Cisco router.

Any suggestions?

Thank a lot!

I would not want to set the workstation default gateway to the PIX since I think it would be suboptimal for traffic with destinations on the local subnet or for traffic with destinations in the internet. So that leaves alternatives of the proxy server or the old router. I would prefer to set the workstation default gateway to the old router. On the old router you can easily set a route that sends traffic for 192.168.0.0 to the PIX and set a default route for everything else to 192.168.1.3.
