We are looking at vlans and subnets for our network. Currently we use one subnet 10.100.100.0 and want to break this up into different subnets. My question is what is the best way to do this with our existing hardware. We have a 3640 w/ IP image only, 4006 switch w/ Sup II engine for our dist. switch, and 3550 SMI for our access switches. Granted the best way is Sup III for the 4006, but it's beyond our budget. Shot it all on the 3550's. The next idea that comes to mind is upgrade the IOS to IP Plus on the router and use subinterfaces. However I seem to recall something about the 3550's doing basic ip routing. Anyway any ideas on the best way to go, and some tips for implementing. TIA

Hi,
3550 SMI is enough for basic routing (static and RIP). EMI is necessary for advanced routing (tunnel interfaces, OSPF, etc.). See the 3550 Software Configuration Guide.
What I would do is configuring 3550 as "router on the stick" connected via a 802.1q trunk to your 4006. You don't need any subinterfaces for inter-VLAN routing in this case. Static routing is fine for a small number (up to 20) of subnets.
