The "V" stands for Vertical.

ok as i menionted above the diffrence between virtical and horizantal that vertical:

provides front-to-back airflow that is optimized for hot and cold aisle designs in colocated data center and service provider deployments and is compliant with Network Equipment Building Standards (NEBS) deployments

V-E and NEB-A are both Virtical but:

Cisco Catalyst 6509-V-E chassis is part of the enhanced Cisco Catalyst 6500 series of switches, offering enhanced benefits over the Cisco Catalyst 6509-NEB-A chassis. Table 1 compares the Cisco Catalyst 6509-NEB-A to the Cisco Catalyst 6509-V-E chassis.

As the other posters have already described, you have the "ordinary" 6500s and the versions with NEBS certifications.

What might not be as clear, although this can be seen in the stats of one of Marwanshawi's posts, is Cisco has upgraded both versions to allow for more power within the chassis and to support more bandwidth to line cards.

So you "ordinary" 6500s:

6509 (original) to 6509-E (enhanced)

and the NEBS versions:

6509-NEB-A (original) to 6509-V-E (enhanced)

As to why the NEBS versions use vertical cards rather the horizontal cards, it might be it made it easier to meet NEBS certification or it might be Cisco just wanted them to look different or somewhere in between.

Except for the NEBS certifications, a 6509-NEB-A is sort of equivalent to a 6509 while a 6509-V-E is sort of equivalent to a 6509-E.
