Operating System 64 Error:The specified network name is no longer available

We're seeing a lot of the above error when trying to copy a large (> 1MB) file to another computer by using either C$ or ADMIN$. This is even if you use the IP address, rather than the DNS name. This started as a failure by our Critical Patches scanner/deployer server (Shavlik's HFNetChkPro) to deploy needed patches, as it couldn't copy them.

Through experimentation, we've found that, in most cases you can connect and even map the C$ or ADMIN$, and even install DameWare for remote access (these are Win2K Pro w/SP4 or WinXP Pro w/SP1 or 2 computers), but, you cannot copy large files, or, in some cases, even install DameWare.

More experimentation proved that this error only occurs across VLAN/Subnets, not within a VLAN/Subnet.

We're on a ADS Domain (2003 version), use domain-based Windows DNS and DHCP. Our core switches are 6509's.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello,

As you said that this problem occurs between Vlan's .How many 6509's you have in your NW ?. If you have 2 6509's and this is happening with Vlan's which are active in different 6509's , then check the connectivity between both 6509's . We have similar setup as u said (win 2003 ADC with ADC integrated DNS and DHCP running in same DC. Try to copy between Vlan's which are active in same 6509 .

I have searched in Microsoft Technet also and it gave some results . Give a try in Microsoft site also , may be a bug or any Service pack update or patch update may be required.

Thanks

Raju

Thanks, I'll take a look and see...
