question of multicast rp redundancy

Hi All,

Can I use more than 1 RPs in multicast at the same time for load balancing and redundancy? If I can, how can I config it? If I can not, can I use auto-rp feature for redundancy? And another question is in auto-rp, when the selected RP fail, Can the mapping-agent detect the failure? If it can, how long can the mapping-agent know the RP failure? Thank You!

Yes, you can have more than one RPs in the multicast network, and use them for load balancing (one RP serves some multicast groups, other RP serves other groups) and redundancy too. See this simple link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk828/tk363/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094821.shtml#autowithmult

If there are two RPs serving same multicast groups, the RP with highest IP address will be choosen and the other will be the backup in case the primary fails.
